Free Local Events for the First Week of June

Memorial Day weekend and its accompanying festivities may be over, but that doesn’t mean the events and celebrations are stopping. We’ve got a couple of events happening this week to highlight that are taking place in Miami Beach as well as in Miami and beyond.

If you’re a fan of art and the numerous ways in which it’s portrayed, visit the Olympia Theater in Miami and attend the Free Words event where you can listen to lyrical readings as part of the theater’s monthly Lobby Lounge series. Also happening tonight is the Studio Crawl at ArtCenter where you can chit chat with artists and check out current exhibitions from 7 to 10 pm.

The Perez Art Museum in Miami is hosting its monthly First Thursdays tomorrow from 10 am to 5 pm. You can check out the museum’s variety of artwork while enjoying free admission.

On Friday, head to Coral Gables and attend Coral Gables Gallery Night. You can use the city’s free trolley to get around and explore the city’s various galleries and you may even manage to snag some complimentary wine.

The Batuke Samba Funk band will be performing right here in Miami Beach. This year the concerts will be taking place at Normandy Fountain on Normandy Drive and will kick off at 6 pm until 9 pm.

Memorial Day Weekend in Miami Beach

The Memorial Day festivities are gearing up to be even bigger and better in Miami Beach. To deal with the anticipated profusion of people expected to be celebrating on the beach, the city is creating a traffic loop along Washington Avenue, Fifth Street, and Collins Avenue which should keep things running smoothly, so keep that in mind if you’re planning on visiting.

But enough about traffic, let’s see what you can do to have some fun on the barrier island this weekend!

Over at the Faena Theater on Collins Avenue, singer-songwriter and producer Miguel will be performing this Friday at 11 pm. Miguel made his musical debut with his 2010 album All I Want Is You which became a sleeper hit and has released two additional albums since then, Wildheart being his most recent. Tickets for the Miguel concert range between $25 to $183.

Former Miami Beach resident Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz will also be performing on Friday at 11 pm at Story on Collins Avenue. Tickets cost $30 plus additional fees. Rappers Fabolous and Rick Ross are also scheduled to make appearances at Story.

On Saturday, head over to the North Miami Beach area and participate in the Rubber Duckie Pool Partyat Duffy’s Sports Grill. The 21 and over event will feature artists Oscar G, Donnie Lowe, and plenty more. Tickets for the party cost $13.
